Scientific nonsense for money

Science published an article about fake scientific article factories that sell authorship for money. What has long been known in the post-Soviet space is only now becoming widely known in the Western scientific community. Since the officials who allocate funds for science don't understand the meaning of scientific articles, but rather pay simply for the mere existence of publications, this continues:

Thousands of shady ads sell paper authorship for cash, large-scale investigation finds

Results are “only the tip of the iceberg” of shadowy paper-mill marketplace

Russia's spending on Research and development in 2024 is below 1% of GDP

The website of the Institute of Economic Forecasting, RAS published an article “Russian Economy: Challenged”. It indicates that spending on Research and development has been on a downward trend since the early 2000s, and by 2024, spending has dropped below what it was in the 1990s. How this relates to the government’s plans for a “colossal” increase in spending on science is not entirely clear.

The journal "Science" writes about scientific publications created using artificial intelligence, as well as the resource aiXiv.

Science reports that aiXiv accepts articles written with the help of AI. Personally, I'm not opposed to such knowledge. I see potential in network AI in that it can quickly scan through numerous sources and return the most relevant ones to a prompt, as well as provide a concise overview of the question. I searched for materials on my topic, and the AI returned my own work. Although its summary and rating weren't exactly what I thought, it was useful because it allows me to see my own work from a different perspective, as other people might perceive it, and provides new food for thought.

Russian scientists express skepticism about the Russian government's plans to increase spending on science.

The magazine "Science" writes: Russia’s plan for ‘colossal’ science spending boost faces skepticism
Government pledges to more than triple research spending by 2030

Сhemist Alexey Bobrovsky, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences says: “We’ve essentially reverted to the early 2000s, exacerbated by the isolation of Russian science” because of sanctions imposed as a result of the war in Ukraine. “Given the overall economic situation in Russia, such plans of the Russian state are too optimistic.”

Science.org: Explorers of Ukrainian caves may have brought deadly bat fungus to U.S.

White-nose syndrome in bats is a strain of fungus that was unwittingly brought to North America by Ukrainian cave explorers. Mice become infected with it during hibernation. My imagination immediately ran wild and I imagined that such a fungus could be dangerous to space travelers who are in suspended animation during long-term space flight. Thus, this organism would be even more dangerous to Ripley than the Aliens:

Abstract

Hybridizing superconductivity with topology and magnetism attracts growing interest in condensed matter physics. Here, we present our findings on the measurement of supercurrent induced in an intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4. By constructing a MnBi2Te4 proximity Josephson junction, we observed an anomalously large period of the Fraunhofer patterns, indicating a strong Josephson coupling state. As the MnBi2Te4 thickness is reduced, a distinct asymmetric edge supercurrent emerges, aligning consistently with the observed oscillatory junction magnetoresistance. Leveraging this large asymmetric edge supercurrent, we have realized a nonvolatile Josephson diode device with programmable polarity, achieved through training with an out-of-plane magnetic field. Theoretical calculations substantiate that these behaviors are attributed to the interference between the highly asymmetric topological edge channel–mediated supercurrent induced in MnBi2Te4. Our study establishes this system as a promising avenue for investigating topological superconductivity, chiral Majorana edge modes, and advanced functionality device applications.

My comment: This is a surprising thing for me, although the physics is very clear. This is the ability to cause nuclear reactions with subthreshold (essentially optical, non-nuclear) electromagnetic radiation. Only due to the high intensity of light, and therefore high voltages of the electrical component.

President Donald Trump’s administration says it is within its rights to continue an extensive freeze on foreign aid, despite being told to lift the blockade by a federal judge. But administration opponents say that claim is “brazen defiance” of the judge’s order.

Electric plasma guided with ultrasonic fields

Science Advances

Vol 11, Issue 6

Electric plasma forms sparks in midair that transfer electrical current. This current can power high-voltage electronics, kill bacteria, produce tactile sensations, or be used for welding. However, the formation of the spark is chaotic and hard to control. Laser pulses can guide discharges but require high power and are disruptive and cumbersome to control. Here, we show that ultrasonic fields can guide plasma sparks, even around obstacles. The ultrasonic beams can be directed dynamically and within milliseconds, enabling precise, nondangerous, and fast control of high-voltage sparks. This phenomenon can be used for applications in high-voltage switching and plasma treatments.

187Os nuclear resonance scattering to explore hyperfine interactions and lattice dynamics for biological applications

Science Advances
7 Feb 2025
Vol 11, Issue 6

Abstract

Osmium complexes with osmium in different oxidation states (II, III, IV, and VI) have been reported to exhibit antiproliferative activity in cancer cell lines. Herein, we demonstrate unexplored opportunities offered by 187Os nuclear forward scattering (NFS) and nuclear inelastic scattering (NIS) of synchrotron radiation for characterization of hyperfine interactions and lattice dynamics in a benchmark Os(VI) complex, K2[OsO2(OH)4]. We determined the isomer shift [δ = 3.3(1) millimeters per second] relative to [OsIVCl6]2− and quadrupole splitting [ΔEQ = 12.0(2) millimeters per second] with NFS. We estimated the Lamb-Mössbauer factor [0.80(4)], extracted the density of phonon states, and carried out a thermodynamics characterization using the NIS data combined with first-principles calculations. Overall, we provide evidence that 187Os nuclear resonance scattering is a reliable technique for the investigation of hyperfine interactions and Os-specific vibrations in osmium(VI) species and is thus applicable for such measurements in osmium complexes of other oxidation states, including those with anticancer activity such as Os(III) and Os(IV).

Compact, cheaper, laser-powered particle accelerators get real

Little powerhouses might someday replace billion-dollar, kilometer-long behemoths at major x-ray facilities

An elegant new concept may be about to revolutionize the technology of particle acceleration, which animates huge atom smashers and x-ray sources. For decades, some physicists have strived to develop an accelerator powered by laser light that would be much smaller and cheaper than existing machines. Recent progress suggests laser plasma accelerators (LPAs) may soon realize that bright promise.

Breakdown of collaboration with CERN forcing many physicists to reorient work

In the dead of the Russian winter, many of the nation’s physicists are feeling a particular chill. Banished since late last year from Europe’s CERN, the world’s largest particle physics laboratory, and increasingly isolated by trade sanctions that have complicated purchases of scientific equipment, many Russian physicists are having to dramatically reorient their work—with some looking to China for collaboration.

The gift economy in Russian science

The gift economy is an economy in which economic benefits are provided to a client with an influential patron in exchange for a returned gift, a portion of the profits from the client's business [https://youtu.be/HX2M1FDuboI]. As a rule, this involves more severe exploitation of the subordinate than in a market economy. All of this takes place outside of the usual institutional tax mechanism. The origins of such an economic system appeared, apparently, a very long time ago. In many archaic societies, such a system still exists. In the USSR, such a system was hidden and not declared, moreover, it was publicly condemned in words, which did not interfere with its existence. The existence of such a hidden system of "gifts" (purchasing positions) is described in Voslensky's book "Nomenclature" [http://krotov.info/lib_sec/03_v/osl/ensky_0.htm].

In the modern Russian Federation, this economic system, the gift economy, exists in parallel with the emergence of a market economy and a consumption economy, which, apparently, leads to contradictions between the power that emerged from the party nomenclature of the USSR and a new capitalist class. The new capitalist class of the Russian Federation is still subject to the old communist nomenclature and their descendants.

How exactly does it work? The government gives the client permission for any activity. If the client is not included in the circle of people close to the nomenclature (for example, is not a relative) and works without a black kickback (this is not a bribe, but a periodic transfer of money to a representative of the benefactor), then the patron oversees the business and, if it develops successfully, then the business is simply taken away from the owner, and the owner can be killed or imprisoned. Thus, any large successful business must be owned by a certain nomenclature family and managed by its representative.

How does it work in Russian science? Following the successes of Soviet atomic and rocket projects in the 1940s-1960s, the nomenclature viewed scientific positions as a convenient sinecure for their representatives. The descendants of the nomenclature began to head large scientific organizations. This became especially noticeable in the 70-80s. For example, Igor Troitsky wrote about such a case in the third part of the trilogy "Memoirs of the Old PhysTech" [https://7i.7iskusstv.com/y2019/nomer1/troizkij/]. Science is possible only if you receive funding for your research, but if you are embedded in the  gift economy, then you must bring part of the funds allocated for science through the back door back to the representative of the patron who controls the distribution of funds. All attempts to obtain funding on their own, over the head of the head of a scientific organization, are harshly suppressed. If, nevertheless, there is an opportunity to receive funds from an independent grant, then conditions are created in a state scientific or educational institution that impede the implementation of a scientific project.

To date, there are almost no scientific foundations in the Russian Federation that support independent research. For example, the Russian Foundation for Basic Research was transferred to the Russian Science Foundation, which limited the economic freedom of research that the Russian Foundation for Basic Research had. After receiving money from a foreign scientific foundation, an individual can be recognized as a “foreign agent” and held accountable.

This situation is not conducive to engaging in scientific activities in the Russian Federation. There is no way out of this situation. Simply accepting the existing "rules of the game" is not an option. The goal of science in Russia is to receive "gifts" from a position, and not to seek the truth and not to benefit from scientific developments. To some extent, science can be used for the Russian military. If you are at the bottom of the food chain (the definition of social Darwinism), then such activities will not bring joy, moral satisfaction, or money, but only a broken life, financial problems at the end of a career, and health problems. Therefore, if possible, you need to look for a means of survival in another area. And to work for the sake of science for the soul is necessary where it is really in demand.
